Russell Family

This author is attempting to learn more of the Gallia Co, OH Russell family.  Any correspondence from other family members would be greatly appreciated.  Alvin Russell is thought to have been a son of Isaac Russell and Rhoda Hoppas. On the 1850 Gallia Co, OH census he is enumerated in an adjacent household to Isaac Russell Sr. & Isaac Russell Jr. Documentation of the relationship would be greatly welcomed.  According to the "Cemeteries of Springfield Township, Gallia County, Ohio", published by the Gallia County Historical Society, Isaac Russell is buried at Mt. Olive Cemetery, located at Mt. Olive Church on the Bidwell-Mt. Olive Road.  Buried next to him is A. J. Russell Co. I 173 Ohio Infantry.  Both entries are noted with an *.  The only clue to this * is a asterisked footnote at the end of Row I which reads, "These persons were once buried at Porter, Ohio in a family cemetery which had to be moved when Route 160 by-passed the village."  Those marked with an * in Row I were Russell individuals, which leads me to believe that may be the explanation for the * in Row VI, where Isaac & A. J. Russell are buried.  The mystery lies in the fact that "Cemeteries of Morgan Township Gallia County, Ohio", published by the Gallia County Historical Society, lists an entry for Alvin Russell Co I 173 OVI at Clark Chapel Cemetery, located on Clark Chapel Road (about 1 1/2 miles from Porter.)  That entry is also marked with an *.  I have not been able to find an explanation for that * in the book legend.  This author has visited Clark Chapel Cemetery numerous times.  Alvin Russell's tombstone at that cemetery appears to be 'period' and is located near the plot of his in-laws the Rev. Harrison Willis.  There appeared to be only one Alvin Russell who served in Co I 173rd Ohio.  How can the two tombstones in different cemeteries be explained?

1. Enoch1 Russell was born 15 Oct 1760 in Essex Co, VA1, and died 29 Apr 1847 in Bloomfield Township, Jackson Co, OH2,3,4. He married (1) Ruth Riddle Abt. 1782 in Caroline Co, VA5. She was born Abt. 1762 in Virginia5, and died 04 May 1826 in Gallia Co, OH5. He married (2) Martha McQuade 28 Apr 1827 in Gallia Co, OH5.  They are buried in Keystone Cemetery, Bloomfield Township, Jackson Co, OH.

Enoch Russell, who resided during the American Revolution at Caroline County, Virginia acted in the capacity of Private. He entered service ca 3 June 1780 in Caroline Co, VA Captain Johnson's Militia Co for 3 months; Defeated in battle near Camden, SC 16 Aug 1780, after which he returned home, the company having been destroyed. Entered as a substitute, PVT abt. 10 September 1780, enlisted in Capt. Holt Richardson's Co, volunteering for eight months; marched to Richmond, VA and then to Chesterfield Barracks. Attached to Capt. Denham's Co, Col Campbell's Regiment, in Battle at Guilford, NC, March 1781; retreated to Troublesome Iron Works, then marched to Wilmington, NC then to Camden, SC, where was discharged 10 May 1781. Lived in Caroline Co, VA for some time after the war. (Pension Claim). Total Service, 10 months, 13 days. (NSDAR 720049)

Nickname "Uncle Crick". Was born at 7 months and weighed 1 1/2 pounds. His mother kept her in a quilt in a rocking chair, and kept him hot the whole time, giving him drops of whiskey. She said they never heard him make a sound or move till about 9 months. Then he let out a scream and was fine since.
