Neill McMillan of Bladen Co, NC, Perry Co, AL & Neshoba Co, MS Pictured Left: Neill McMillan & his wife Mary Ann McDonald (Picture courtesy of the late Charles Germany) Mr. Germany relayed to me the history of the picture as follows, "This picture was mounted in a large wooden frame which was in the big hall of the "Old McMillan Home" at Dowdville. This type of hall is sometimes referred to as a dog trot. I took a picture of this picture back in the 1970's." We are saddened to report that Charles Germany died on July 2, 2004. Neill McMillan's tombstone, at Old Carolina Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Neshoba Co, MS, indicates he was born 1788. Census records show the birth location to be North Carolina. The area of North Carolina from which most of our Neshoba County Highland Scots came, shows a great confusion of McMillan families with the use of the given name Neil quite common. The first location in which we can definitively place our Neill McMillan is Bladen Co, NC, where he served in the Bladen County Militia Company of Capt. John Nicholson in the War of 1812. Neil McMillan filed for a pension based on that service shortly before he died. Capt. John Nicholson was living next door to a John McMillan in Bladen County; and is buried at Brown Marsh Presbyterian Church Cemetery in that same county. His tombstone inscription reads as follows: "CAPT. JOHN NICHOLSON of the U.S.A., a native of Scotland, died May 11, 1814, aged 45 yrs. At the call to arms in 1812 he stept forth in the defense of the country of his adoption & raised a company of volunteers who were marched to Ft. Johnson & after remaining 6 months in the service were discharged & he appointed Capt. in the regular Army." Served as a Private in Capt. John Nicolson's Company of North Carolina Detached Militia, stationed at Deepwater Point, North Carolina, belonging to Detachment under command of Major John A. Lillington, War of 1812. From the county of Bladen, NC. War of 1812 Pension SC-20528, Neil McMillan of Neshoba Co, MS served in Capt. John Nicholson's Co NC Militia, Enlisted July 14, 1812, Discharged December 26, 1812. A separate document shows him to have enlisted in Capt. John Nicholson's Company of the NC Militia as a Volunteer in Bladen Co, NC in 1813 for a period of 12 months and been discharged in 1814. He also indicated he had made application for a land warranty in 1849 and was a resident of Laurel Hill, Neshoba Co, MS. He indicated that he was married to Mary A. McDonald in Marion (Perry Co) Alabama on the 19th of May 1831. Appearing as pension document witnesses for him were Neshoba County residents W. D. Dominick & E. M. Alexander. Another document reported that "A report from the "Third Auditor" shows that Neil McMillen served in Captain John Nicholson's company North Carolina Militia from July 14, 1812 to December 26, 1812." Length of Service: 166 days. A pension was approved March 21, 1873, with the certificate dated March 28, 1873, in the amount of eight dollars per month, from February 14, 1871, the date of the Act. (There was another Neil McMillen (with a widow named Agnes) who also enlisted in Bladen Co, NC in a different company of the NC Militia. The government has inaccurately combined these two pension file suspecting them to be the same soldier. That soldier lived in Bladen Co, NC 1852-53. His widow later lived in Madison Co, TX) Fourth Regiment, First Company, Detached from the Bladen Regiment Female descendants of Neil McMillan are eligible for members in the National Society United States Daughter of 1812 based on his service in the Bladen Co, NC Militia during the War of 1812. Neil McMillan had an 80 acre land grant December 1830 in Greene Co, AL. In May of the following year he married Mary Ann McDonald in Marion, Perry Co, AL. Their first son John M. McMillan, born May 26, 1832 indicates that he was born in Tuscaloosa Co, AL. Her parents were living in that county at the time of the birth. Early Land Patents in Neshoba County, MS were applied for by Neill McMillan of Madison County, MS. Since a child was born in Alabama in 1834, it appears that Neill McMillan made the move to Madison Co, MS no earlier than that year. Although he bought land and appeared on the personal tax rolls for Neshoba County in 1836 two parcels of land awarded 2/27/1841 were applied for from Madison County. The 1840 Neshoba Co Census proves a move prior to that date. A Perry Co, AL land sale dated. November 21, 1836 shows Neill McMillan of State of Mississippi, County of Neshoba selling about 40 acres of land to Jacob Johnson of State of Alabama, county of Tuscaloosa. His wife died in 1869 and Neill McMillan is shown in 1870 living in the household of his son-in-law William Dowd. He died May 5, 1873 and is buried at Old Carolina Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Neshoba Co, MS. |

Sarah McMillian of South Carolina, Clarke Co, AL, Hinds Co,
MS Sarah McMillian's origins are one of those wonderful mysteries that genealogists love to tackle. It became obvious early that prior research held flawed conclusions. A manuscript on the Walton family at the Philadelphia/Neshoba County (MS) Library indicated that Sarah was a daughter of Nathan McMillan of Clarke Co, AL. That Nathan McMillan appears to have been about the right age to have been a brother, rather than a father of our Sarah. A South Carolina search for the family of her husband John Walton provided the clues which led to a deduction as to her probable parentage. Although this parentage has not yet been documented it seems highly likely. This researcher would appreciate correspondence with anyone who has definitive information regarding the following family. We know that John Walton & Sarah McMillan married in the latter half of 1799 in South Carolina. Their oldest son, James, was born 28 May 1800 in South Carolina. Since John Walton's probable family did not use the name James, that name most likely came from the McMillan side of the family. A search of South Carolina deeds found these gems: Edgefield District, SC Deed Book 20, p. 37-40; William Moore to
John Walton. Deed, 6 February 1800, $300. 150 acres on a branch of Ninety Six
Creek originally granted to Robert Cunningham 17 Feb 1767 from said Robert
Cunningham conveyed to John Moore and from Moore to above named William Moore,
said lands joining lands of Colbert Anderson, John Cunningham, and vacant land,
one spring of water lying in said tract known as Little Spring excepted. Wit:
Jas McMillan, John McMillan. Proven Abbeville District, 16 February 1801 by
James McMillan, Wm Nibbs. J.Q. Recorded 24 March 1801. We have in the above deeds John Walton, with a wife named Salley, named in deeds during what is known to be the early part of their married life, with witness being a James McMillan. Abbeville District, SC was known to be the origin point of a caravan of early settlers that traveled to western Alabama. James McMillan and Martha "Patsy" Moore can be documented in Edgefield District, SC deeds as moving to Abbeville District. Further research turned up the fact that James McMillan was married to Martha "Patsy" Moore, sister of William Moore who deeded Edgefield land to John Walton. Enumerated adjacent to the John Walton household in 1830 Clarke Co, AL was one William Moore. The 1783 birth date of Sarah McMillan is consistent with the census age of a daughter of James McMillan and Martha "Patsy" Moore. Naming patterns in the Sarah McMillan / John Walton family are indicative of a familial connection to the Moore / McMillan family of Edgefield / Abbeville District, SC. This researcher would very much love to obtain additional information and/or documentation regarding the family, history and ultimate demise of James McMillan and Martha "Patsy" Moore. |
