Goodwin Family

The Virginia ancestral homeland of the Goodwin family is a breathtakingly beautiful neck of land surrounded by water.  The first time I visited Goodwin Neck was strictly by accident.  That Saturday I planned to search for family origins in Essex Co, VA.  I exited I-64 on Route 17 and headed along that road toward my destination.  Shortly after turning onto Route 17,  I began to have very strange feelings.  For no obvious reason, cold shivers ran up and down my back.  Certain that something very unusual was happening to me, I started to take notice of my surroundings in hopes of finding an explanation.  The first thing I noticed was a sign that read Chisman Creek.  It was then that I understood.  I was in an ancestral homeland and didn't even know it.  Those who came before were alerting me to the fact.  Shortly after passing Chisman Creek I arrived at the intersection of Goodwin Neck Road.  Of course traveling to Essex County was now out of the question.  Without a second thought I turned down Goodwin Neck Road in search of my past.  How could I not, since my family had given me such an unquestionable alert.

Major Edmund Chisman Goodwin

Edmund Chisman Goodwin was the youngest son of a family that traces its roots to the beginnings of Colonial Virginia history.  He served his country as an officer in the Virginia Militia during the War of 1812.  In the latter part of his life he moved his entire family to the frontier of Western Tennessee, dying in Brownsville, Haywood Co, TN in the Year of Our Lord 1849.  His granddaughter Sarah Eason Jones passed the details of his life and family to her granddaughter Virginia Sue Johnson.  That dear lady, my grandmother's first cousin, passed the same details to me.  Through the medium of the internet I now bequeath this family's history to the ages.   Edmund Chisman Goodwin's signature (shown above) was photocopied by this descendant at the National Archives from the original affidavits he submitted for payment of his War of 1812 service.
