Nestled in the midst of the huge medical complex that is now Portsmouth Naval Hospital one finds an oasis from the past. The neatly manicured burial ground marks the different stages in the area's naval history. Civil War era sailors lie in the same resting place as those of sailors from foreign lands who never found their way home. Casualties of the Yellow Fever epidemic rest forever in their midst. Standing watch over the eternal residents are the buildings that today prevent modern sailors and soldiers from suffering the fate of their predecessors. All lie in the heart of the City of Portsmouth, VA on a picturesque waterfront property looking across the river to the City of Norfolk. The site of historic Fort Nelson is on the same property.
