Lindemayer-Burre Family

Initially the birth record of Maria Wilhelmine Burre was something of a mystery.  On her tombstone her family indicated her maiden name to be Buhr.  This agreed with the name shown on the birth records of most of her children.  One indicated Lindemann-Burren.   Therefore it was a surprise when a translator located by researcher Eugene Wengert indicated that her father's name was shown as Lindemann and her mother's name was Burre.  I determined to attack this problem on my next research trip to the LDS library in Salt Lake City.  The plan met with more success than I ever imagined.  LDS's amazing employees at the International Desk immediately recognized my dilemma as being explained by a commonly accepted practice in Westfalen at the time.  When a family farm was inherited by a daughter, the man who married that daughter would take her name.  Such was the case in the instance of the parents of Maria Wilhelmine Lindemayer-Burre.  The Burre family farm history was detailed in the Vlotho Parish Familie Book.  Each man who married a Burre farm inheritant was noted, along with his birth name.  Thus I was able to unravel the mystery of the family line by delving further in church records.  The most interesting discovery in this tale is that fact that, although our family bore than name, we have no Burre blood running in our veins.  Neither of Anna Catherina Maria Burre's parents were a Burre by blood.  Her father Johann Albert Schlack married the Widow Burre (Anna Elisabetha Schlütter), who had inherited the Burre farm from her deceased husband.  Johann Albert Schlack then took the Burre name when he gained possession of the farm through his marriage to the Widow Burre.  The children of that marriage also took the Burre name.
