The
Hail family story is one that is just starting to take shape after years of
research. Per his census records William W. Hail
was born about 1789 in North Carolina. The first North Carolina area in
which he can be definitively placed is Halifax Co, NC. Legal transactions
in that county prove a first wife, Holley, daughter of Aaron Powell.
There are also close associations with Andrew W. Hail, who moved with him both to Montgomery Co, TN
and later to Mississippi, and James H. Hail whose close familial connection is
strongly implied by Halifax County deeds. A John Hail also made the early
move to Montgomery Co,, TN.
The current breakthroughs are a result of the location of a
descendant of James H. Hail. The ages of the two men point to their
relationship being that of brothers. The family migration patterns and
naming, combined with the Halifax deed association, convinced me that
relationship was a certainty. A search of Halifax Co, NC records turned up the
family of a Jonathon Hail, who died leaving children of legal age (per census records) and those requiring
guardianship as stated below:
"HAIL, JONATHON. Administration granted James Marshall, Nov.
1800. Nancy Hail (widow of the deceased.) requested her year's support, Nov.
1800. Inventory and account of sales by the said administrator, Feb. 1801. Second
account of sales, May, 1801. William Hargrove was appointed guardian of William,
Ely, James and John Hail (orphans of the deceased.), Feb. 1802."
Both William W. Hail and James H. Hail named children Eli W.
Their ages are consistent with being underage at the time of the above 1802
accounting.
And an older, unexplained Nancy Hail can be found in the
cemetery records of Montgomery Co, TN. Based on the age of his
spouse, Andrew W. Hail would have been of a legal age in 1802. Therefore we
can reasonably assume that both William W. & James H. Hail, and probably Andrew
W. Hail and the John Hail who moved to Montgomery Co, TN, were all sons of Jonathon Hail
A resident of Clarkesville, TN by 1819,
William W. Hail made the move with his own family and his Powell in-laws. During his
Montgomery County sojourn first
wife Holley Powell died. Subsequently William W. Hail married former Halifax Co, NC
neighbor Nancy W. Bass, daughter of Maclin Bass. Their marriage bond was filed December 16, 1829 in
Maury Co, TN, where the Bass family was residing.
William W. Hail moved
his family to Marshall Co, MS about 1837 and lived there for his remaining life.
He was a resident of the Mt. Pleasant community and a founder of Mt. Pleasant
Methodist Episcopal Church.
Daughter Susan D. Hail married William
Johnson 1841 in Marshall County. The couple, along with a number of
Susan's brothers, moved to White Co, AR. The timing of the move was probably
immediately following the War Between the States. Susan returned to Mt. Pleasant after William Johnson's
1869 death
and lived her remaining years in that community. Her children are known for
the old Johnson Hotel, a historic icon of the community.
For many years this researcher was convinced that Susan D.
Hail was the first child of William W. Hail's marriage to Nancy W. Bass, since
she named her second son Maclin Bass Johnson. But the recently found
Hail/Bass marriage bond was filed more than four years after Susan's birth.
So now the naming of her child is more likely explained by what must truly be
the first child of the Hail/Bass marriage: Maclin Bass Hail born December
23, 1830. That child would be Susan D. Hail's half brother. He was
also a member of the family group that moved to White Co, AR.
The evolving story of the Hail family now winds back to the
Southfarnham Parish in Essex Co, VA. Jonathan Hail, along with brothers
Williamson and Aris Hail, made the move from Virginia to Halifax Co, NC
following the death of their father. The long evolution of this family's
story seems to be rapidly approaching a successful conclusion.
William W. Hail's signature (above) was obtained from his
December 16, 1829 Maury Co, TN marriage bond to Nancy W. Bass, daughter of
Maclin Bass.
Descendants of Nancy W. Bass and William W.
Hail are eligible for
membership in the National Society Daughters of the
American Revolution through the Patriotic Service of her grandfather, Henry
Bass.

The Jonas Hail family is an interesting one that uses the same Hail spelling as
does our family. There are also given name similarities. Northampton Co, NC is directly
adjacent to Halifax County. Therefore interaction between families and
movements between the areas would be common.
