The Gordon Family
of Union District SC & Union, MS

Sunday dinner (served at noon - not late afternoon) at Aunt Flossie's house was an occasion which will never be forgotten.  The table was covered with more food than one could ever imagine.  There was never just one main dish.  One feasted on fried chicken, ham, and a kaleidoscope of vegetables.   Dessert, which always featured 4-5 pies and cakes, had to be relegated to the sideboard.  Prior to dinner the men discussed the important issues of the world through a thick haze of smoke, while the woman worked to help Aunt Flossie present the massive meal.  Children were free to explore the massive yard.  The boys ran off on their own and never allowed the girls to follow.   In middle age I have learned that the same thing occurred when our parents' generation was young.  My father and his cousins were reported to have led their younger brothers into the woods and then sprinted out, leaving the younger siblings to fend for themselves.  Uncle Benton had a barber shop on Bank Street, where he presided, with Uncle Marshall staffing the second chair.  Beyond a doubt the barber shop had the best comic book collection in town.  The gruff outer shell of Uncle Benton sometimes made me ponder whether to tag along for my father or brother's haircut.  The comic books always won out.  The big white house still sits on top of the same hill.  Aunt Flossie and Uncle Benton will always remain there in my heart.
