April 27, 1901 - May 4, 1965 July 19, 1900 - May 3, 1965 Benton Gordon, who owned a barber shop with the best comic book collection in Union, was the son of Eugene Gordon & Nettie Smith. He was married on March 1, 1922 to Flossie Clay Edwards, the daughter of Richmond Lewis Edwards & Miriam Leona Gray. The couple lived in a large white house on the north side of the top of the first hill after you cross the Hwy 15 bypass heading east on Hwy 492 from Union. The property had belonged to Flossie's parents. This writer remembers Sunday dinners at that wonderful house with great pleasure. Aunt Flossie always served a huge table of food. In addition there was a sideboard which featured at least a half dozen pies and cakes. As this huge meal was served Aunt Flossie always fretted about 'whether she had enough'. The President of the United States couldn't have asked for more. The day after Aunt Flossie's death, Uncle Benton, his sons, and my father went to Greenland Cemetery to pick out the gravesite. While they stood at the spot you see above, Uncle Benton said, "I've done my part boys, now its up to you." He then collapsed and died. There was a double funeral. |
Rex Gordon, Sr. June 11, 1923 - March 17, 1993 Oldest son of Benton Gordon & Flossie Edwards, Rex Gordon was more than a cousin to my father. He was a close friend and best man at my parents' wedding. Rex Gordon was many things: husband, father, lawyer, judge, and friend to many. He was eulogized by the Governor of the State of Mississippi and Senator Trent Lott, who credited Rex with being instrumental in his decision to enter the world of politics. |

Duck Louie Son of O. J. & Mary Gordon Born December 4, 1905 Died July 10, 1936 In 1936 Millsaps College was looking forward to the return of it's star quarterback. But Louie Gordon would not return. On July 10, 1936, Uncle Louie died while working on the family farm in Greenland. Nine years later, his older brother, Clifton took his own life. Most people believe the tragic event of Louie's death was more than Clifton could bear. "Gone Fishing" is a true story of that fateful day in the summer of 1936. Ralph Gordon (Union, MS) |

Greenland Baptist Church (pictured left) sits directly across the road from Greenland Cemetery.
Otho Matlock was a kind man and good neighbor. I never heard him speak evil of another person. When Daddy was sick with cancer, Otho Matlock helped gather our crops and tend to our livestock. His marvelous voice was the icing on the cake for the Greenland Church Choir. I miss Otho Matlock. He was a good friend. "Ode to the Bass Man" is in his honor and memory. Ralph Gordon (Union, MS)
