Miriam Leona Gray Edwards

June 16, 1866 -  June 5, 1944

Mrs. Edwards, Age 77 Died Here Monday
Mrs. Leona Viola Gray Edwards, age 77 years, 11 months and 19 days, passed away at her home just east of Union on Monday, June 5th, 1944, after a lengthy illness.  Mrs. Edwards was the widow of the late R. E. Edwards, who preceded her in death, having died about eleven years ago. One daughter also had gone home before the mother. Surviving are five children: one daughter, Mrs. Benton Gordon, of Union; four sons, R. C. and Gray Edwards of Union; Sidney Edwards of Wattensaw, Arkansas; and Lester Edwards of Springfield, Oregon.  Mrs. Edwards joined the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in her early womanhood and was a faithful child of God to the end. She bore her suffering bravely and longed to meet her savior and her loved ones who had gone to be with God.  Final rites were held from her home Tuesday June 6th at 3:00 o'clock P. M. Rev. Roy Lane and Rev. A. N. Penland officiating. Active pallbearer were: Joe Ethridge, John Harmon, Uhl Walton, Tom Bates, Jim Rivers and Andrew Daniels. Interment was in County Line cemetery beside her husband. Union Funeral Home in Charge.

Old Jim Gordon’s Gold
Back before, the Civil War,
When Dixie was a nation,
There lived a man
On the red clay land, who owned a great plantation.
Old Jim Gordon was his name,
A stash of gold was his claim to fame.
And when the Civil War was fought
Jim took his gold to the Banker’s vault
But the banker’s vault he did not trust,
‘Cause old Jim knew of the Yankees lust.
So he returned there to his farm,
And hid his gold from Sherman’s Arms.

Sherman took the best and burned the rest.
He went to rob old Jim,
A sly old cuss,
He never made a fuss,
He just outsmarted him/

“I have no stash,
Just take my cash,
Then go and leave me be.”
Old Sherman took one look at Jim
And marched on to the sea.

Until this day, old timers say, the gold will always be,
Buried in the ground, near the old ghost town, known as Willoughby.
So bring your shovels and bring your spades,
And dig the ground where the gold was laid.

Before you dig, please let me warn,
Some say this legend is just a yarn,
‘Cause crops were lost at an awful cost,
From men digging little holes;
Not a single dime, did they ever find, of old Jim Gordon’s Gold.
